SOUTHERN INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTORS RECEIVES INDUSTRY AWARD Challenging project named ‘Rigging Job of the Year’ by international trade association

RALEIGH – Demonstrating its ability to handle the toughest rigging jobs, Southern Industrial Constructors recently received a “Rigging Job of the Year” award from the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association (SC&RA), an international trade association.

The award, given in the $150,000-job-and-under category, was earned for its work replacing a condenser at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s cogeneration power plant.

The original condenser weighed 60,000 pounds, and was 20 feet long and 8 feet in diameter. The new condenser weighs 80,000 pounds, and is 24 feet long and 9 feet in diameter. The two condensers had to be switched out of an elevated alcove area into an adjacent room that was only 22 feet wide – barely larger than the old condenser and two feet smaller than the new one.

“This was one of the most challenging jobs Southern Industrial has faced in 45 years of business,” said Earl Johnson Jr., chairman. “Because of severe space limitations and existing piping and electrical systems, our team had very little room in which to work – only one inch in one critical spot. There was nothing easy about this job, which required good, old-fashioned rigging, not to mention patience and hard work. The job was performed safely and on time, and everyone is extremely pleased with the result.”

SC&RA represents 1,200 members in 44 nations. Most of its members are contractors who provide specialized transportation, machinery moving and erecting, plant installations and relocations, industrial construction and plant maintenance, crane and rigging operations and equipment rental. SC&RA seeks to help members operate efficient and safe businesses by monitoring and affecting state and national legislation and regulations; researching and reporting on safety and best practices issues; and hosting forums where industry issues are advanced.

Founded in 1962, Southern Industrial provides a wide range of services throughout the Southeast, including turnkey industrial construction, industrial electrical construction, turnkey plant installations and relocations, plant maintenance, specialized metal fabrication, and turnkey crane and rigging service. Because of its exemplary safety record, Southern Industrial is among the few companies in the state recognized as a STAR contractor by the N.C. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Division. For more information about Southern Industrial, visit www.southernindustrial.com
